Erick Silva proved he’s a major new force to be reckoned with in the welterweight division by taking out Charlie Brenneman by submission in the first round at ‘UFC On FX 3’.
These two wasted little time in getting down to business in the opening round. Brenneman immediately looked for a takedown, but Silva sprawled and made him pay for the failed attempt by firing off a knee and couple of strikes.
That didn’t deter Brenneman though and he attempted another takedown after catching a spinning kick attempt from Silva, and then another after that.
Silva wasn’t making it easy for him though and on this occasion fished for a heel hook submission which forced Brenneman to go on the defensive momentarily.
Back on the feet Silva looks very slick and confident despite having to worry about the continued takedown attempts and lands a couple of nice kicks to the body.
The action stalls momentarily against the cage and the referee parts them. Silva likes the spinning back kick and he throws it a couple more times before sprawling on yet another takedown from Brenneman.
This time he uses the position to take Brenneman’s back before flattening him out and sinking in a rear-naked choke with forces the tap for an impressive win at 4.33mins of Rd1.
A grinding wrestler like Brenneman could have been a real problem for Silva, but the way he was able to not only deal with that constant pressure but also figure out a way to end the fight inside the first round was the sign of a special fighter and I can’t wait to see more from him in the future.
