A middleweight title rematch between divisional kingpin Israel Adesanya and former champ Robert Whittaker is in the works for UFC 271 on February 12th of next year.
Adesanya is coming off another rematch against Marvin Vettori back in June, which he won even more convincingly than their first encounter by unanimous decision.
That was Adesanya’s third successful title defense at 185lbs, though inbetween times he did suffer the only loss of his career when he came up short in a bid to win the light-heavyweight title from Jan Blachowicz back in March, losing out on the scorecards.
Now he’ll go back to fight Whittaker again, after originally defeating him to win the title in October of 2019. Since then Whittaker has returned to winning ways, compiling a three fight winning streak over the past couple of years.
It’s a run that began with a unanimous decision victory over Darren Till, and two more assured wins on the scorecards against Jared Cannonier and Kelvin Gastelum have brought him back to a chance to regain the belt.
Adesanya vs. Whittaker is expected to headline a UFC 271 that’s still in the early stages of being put together, but does already have a fight between Renato Moicano and Alexander Hernandez attached to it.
