Jean Silva took the first round of his fight with Jose Delgado tonight off at UFC Fight Night 288 (aka Noche UFC 4), but when he did finally get going he built up a head of steam that would culminate in a 3rd round submission victory.
Round One
The featherweight main event is underway in Arizona!
Calf kick for Delgado. He lands another one lightly. Body kick for Delgado now.
Back to the calf kick for Delgado in amongst a series of feints, but Silva isn’t biting on any of those and is just waiting for his moment to pounce.
Another calf kick for Delgado. Half-way through the round Delgado steps forward and blasts Silva with a big overhand right that drops him. He’s back up and moves away from the clinch.
Lets see if that gets Silva to throw back at last. Delgado with a spinning kick, but misses and Silva clinches to the back.
Delgado gets out of that and back to striking range. Silva finally unleashes a strike, landing a body kick, but Delgado responds with a punch. Calf kick for Delgado.
Silva pressuring, but not throwing. He lands a left now. Delgado with a high kick off the guard. He threatens with another.
Silva with a nice counter-punch late in the round, but that was a surprisingly low-output round for him.
Round Two
Delgado with a low kick and then a high kick off the guard. Delgado bursts forward with left and right hooks, then Silva counters with a spinning elbow strike.
Calf kick again for Delgado. Body kick for Silva, but Delgado responds with one of his own.
Silva with a right hand. He comes forward, avoids a punch and lands a right hagnd close to the cage.
Silva applying pressure and lands a left. Delgado misses with a front kick upstairs. Right hand for Silva , ducks a counter and lands again. Then Silva catches a knee and lands a takedown off it.
Silva goes into Delgado’s guard. Now he opts to stand over him. He drops down a punch and then another before going back to the mat. Delgado got enough space to get to his knees and then get away to striking range though.
High kick from Silva comes off the guard. Jab for Delgado. Right hand from Silva comes close and Delgado comes back with a flurry of punches off his guard.
High kick attempt from Delgado. Big one-two from Silva and then a spinning elbow attempt, but Delgado unleashes a combination of his own in response.
Round Three
Calf kick for Silva. Now a body punch. Silva moves out of range from Delgado’s strikes.
Inside low kick from Silva. Left hand gets through for Silva. Calf kick from Delgado. Right hand from Silva.
Silva pressuring Delgado close to the cage. Delgado with a combination of punches, but it comes off the guard.
Grazing right hand from Silva. Now an overhand right. Jab for Delgado. Right hand for Silva, then a harder one crashes home and floors Delgado!
Delgado kicks Silva away and then rises while working a takedown attempt, but as they go back to the mat it’s Silva who scrambles around to his back, locks in a rear-naked choke and forces him to tap out at 2:57mins of the third round!
