Jessica Andrade showed off her ground skills tonight at UFC 203 as she took Joanne Calderwood to the mat early and often, before submitting her with a guillotine choke late in the first round.
Round One:
Calderwood starts with a leg kick. She flashes that kick out again. Andrade rushes in with a few punches to the body.
Calderwood with a front kick. Andrade clinches for a moment, landing a knee and punches. They break apart. Solid left hand for Andrade as Calderwood comes in.
Andrade clinching again. Now up against the cage, Andrade lands a takedown, but she’s bleeding from a cut to her left eye, which came from an elbow strike by Calderwood.
Calderwood back up, but Andrade hoists her back up in the air and slams the Scottish fighter back down to the canvas. The Brazilian moves to side control now. She makes an attempt to slide into full mount, but Calderwood defends and brings her back to full guard.
Andrade picks Calderwood up and slams her. Andrade in half guard and trying hard to improve position, but can’t get free. She starts to land some ground and pound. Solid work from her as we approach the final minute of the round.
Andrade gets to side control, but not for long as Calderwood works back to half guard and then is able to stand back up.
However, as she’s going upright Andrade immediately locks in a guillotine choke and drops to the mat with it. It’s extremely tight, and with Calderwood’s face going red she’s left with no option but to tap out at 4.38mins of the first round.
