The UFC have announced that Scotland’s own Joanne Calderwood will fight rising star Cynthia Calvillo on home soil in Glasgow at UFC Fight Night 113 on Sunday, July 16th.
Calderwood will be fighting for the first time since a submission loss to current strawweight title challenger Jessica Andrade in September of last year.
That snapped a two-fight winning streak for ‘Dr. Kneevil’, but she still holds down the No.7 spot on the official 115lb rankings after a 4-2 run in the UFC so far.
Given that both of Calderwood’s losses have come by submission she’ll have to be wary of Calvillo, who has burst onto the UFC scene with two submission victories over Amanda Cooper and Pearl Gonzales in the space of a month at UFC 209 and UFC 210.
Calvillo’s rise to prominence is particularly surprising given that she’s been fighting professionally for less than a year, and she’s quickly caught the attention of UFC President Dana White, who has made it clear that he believes she is going to be a star.
Still, Calvillo is only 5-0 to date in her career and has just made it into the official strawweight rankings at No.15, so she’s still got a big climb ahead of her to get to the top, and a win over Calderwood in her own backyard would help accelerate her progress.
Calderwood Vs Calvillo joins a UFC Fight Night 113 event that’s set to be headlined by Gunnar Nelson Vs Santiago Ponzinibbio, with local hero Stevie Ray also set to fight Paul Felder on the main card.
