Joe Lauzon TKO’s Takanori Gomi In 1st Round At UFC On FOX 16

Joe Lauzon didn’t take long to put away Takanori Gomi tonight at UFC ON FOX 16, taking him down and TKO’ing him with ground and pound mid-way through the first round.

Round One:

Gomi feeling out with the jab to start. He throws a left now as he goes in on the attack. Lauzon with a jab of his own.

Two hard body punches from Gomi. Another couple of punches from him and two in return from Lauzon.

Short flurry from Lauzon. He does so again, perhaps looking to set up a clinch, but nothing doing on that front for now.

Lauzon staying busy, lands a hook but then swoops down low for tha takedown. He gets Gomi to the mat and has his back and is looking for a leg lock submission momentarily. There’s a scramble and Lauzon ends up attached to his back again.

Lauzon landing some nice elbows to Gomi’s head and then flattens him out. Lauzon starts blasting him with hard punches and Gomi’s pretty much trapped and not defending himself.

A few more land solidly and then Lauzon just stands up and walks away. Referee Herb Dean hesitates for couple of seconds, but with Gomi not really looking like he wants to continue he waves the fight off. Bit of a strange conclusion there, but nonetheless, Lauzon gets the TKO victory at 2.37mins of Rd1.

Lauzon explains afterwards that he thought Gomi was out and not defending himself which is why he stepped away.
