Jon Anik Reveals Joe Rogan’s Frustration At Ref Standing Renato Moicano Up While In Dominant Position

Jon Anik and Joe Rogan weren’t on the call for this past weekend’s UFC Fight Night 292 event, but they both appear eager to give their thoughts on the big talking point of the night.

In the second round of the main event, referee ‘Big’ Dan Miragliotta suddenly forced Renato Moicano to stand back up, despite the fact that he had full control of Tom Nolan’s back at the time, and with a body triangle locked in for good measure.

It proved to be a pivotal moment as while Moicano had been in control of the fight up until then, the momentum almost immediately shifted in Nolan’s favor as he went on the attack, dropped the Brazilian with a well placed knee to the head in-close, and would go on to finish him in the round that followed via strikes.

“Just wait until [Rogan] cracks a mic on the Joe Rogan Experience and talks about this,” Jon Anik said on the latest episode of his podcast with his brother Jason. “He wrote in our text with ‘DC’ [Daniel Cormier], ‘It’s not a sport if refs can do that.’

“I’m not sure much else needs to be said.”

For the record though, Anik also believes that Miragliotta made a clear mistake by standing the fight up at that stage.

“I do believe when somebody has back control like that, a referee will not be able to take it away,” Anik said. “Certainly not that expeditiously.”

Meanwhile, though Moicano himself has so far not got as worked up about what transpired as some fans would have expected, he has acknowledged that he wasn’t happy about it.

“I was a little frustrated with the referee standing the fight up,” Moicano told MMA Fighting. “I was a little frustrated, but frustration is a bad thing… It caught me by surprise when he said, ‘Stand up.’ I don’t remember him giving me any warnings… I have never heard of anyone being stood up from mount or from someone’s back… But I clearly lost focus, I was clearly frustrated, and I got caught with some shots afterward.”

Despite that, Moicano has said he has no plans to pursue the matter any further.
