Light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones indicated last week that he was still eyeing potential ‘superfights’ in the heavyweight division, but according to Luke Rockhold, ‘Bones’ has “not a chance” of winning if he ever tried to face his team-mate and current heavyweight title holder Cain Velasquez.
“Cain, just the storm that he can put on you, you can’t stop it,” Rockhold told MMAFighting.com. “I’ve trained with the guy, I’ve sparred with him so many times, and when he wants to get after you, he’s going to get after you. You can only run away so long. Jon Jones doesn’t have the style to keep him off him. Cain is just a beast, he’ll bull his way right through him.”
In fairness to Jones he never actually called out Velasquez directly. Instead he indicated that he thought he could match up favorably with the champion’s next challenger Fabricio Werdum who’s coming off a TKO stoppage win over Mark Hunt at UFC 180.
Speaking of which, Werdum, who’s now the interim champ, has stated that he’d happily welcome Jones to the heavyweight ranks if that’s what he wants.
“I don’t know why didn’t he said that before I become a champion,” Werdum told Globo. “He said it now but I would fight him for sure without any problem. He has to go up or make it a catchweight bout. But my biggest goal is to fight Cain Velasquez to unify the belts.
Jones has a big fight coming up too as he’s be taking on Daniel Cormier (himself a former heavyweight top contender) in his latest 205lb title defense at UFC 182 on January 3rd in Las Vegas, the start of a blockbuster series of PPV events in the early months of 2015 for the UFC.
