Jorge Masvidal isn’t content with just the idea of avenging his unanimous decision loss to welterweight champion Kamaru Usman last year, he’s already making it clear that if he does so he fully intends to then pursue a trilogy fight with him.
“When I win the rematch we definitely will go for the trilogy,” Masvidal said at an ESPN+ virtual fan Q&A yesterday. “I will not go down in history 1-1 with this individual. It’s just not going to happen.”
Masvidal took the last fight with Usman on short notice, and he thinks that with a full training camp behind him and more time to manage his weight cut that it will put him in a much better place to beat Usman in their rematch at UFC 261 on April 24th.
“I’m not gonna cut 20 pounds of weight—mainly water—in six days [this time]. Right now I’m eight, nine pounds before I hit the mark of 170 so it’s a different cut altogether. That will be the determining factor, I think.”
The 36-year-old Masvidal hasn’t fought since being outwrestled by Usman on Fight Island last July, while the 33-year-old champion has gone on to break a record by surpassing GSP’s longest welterweight winning streak with a third round TKO victory against Gilbert Burns back in February.
