A women’s bantamweight title fight between newly crowned champion Julianna Pena and former long-time belt-holder Amanda Nunes will headline UFC 277 on July 30th in Dallas, Texas.
Pena shocked the world in the first fight between the two last year, managing to outstrike Nunes on the feet for sustained periods before taking her down and sinking in a fight-ending rear-naked choke submission in the second round.
That remarkable result ended Nunes 12-fight unbeaten run, which had included five successful defenses of the 135lb title in addition to also being the reigning featherweight champion too.
As for Pena, she had only been on a 2-2 run heading into the fight, though she had also finished former title contender Sara McMann via the same submission earlier in the year.
Since Pena seized the title the two have competed as opposite coaches on the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter and now they are set to go to battle for a second time in the Octagon to discover whether Pena’s win was really just a freak result or if she truly has Nunes number.
Pena vs. Nunes fronts a UFC 277 card that will also feature a flyweight interim title fight between former champ Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara-France, while elsewhere on the card Derrick Lewis fights Sergei Pavlovich and Luke Rockhold returns to fight Paulo Costa.
