A welterweight title fight between current champion Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns had been pencilled in to take place at UFC 256 on December 12th, but unfortunately it seems that will no longer be the case.
MMAfighting has reported that the fight will no longer be taking place at the event and instead is now being earmarked for early in 2021.
This is the second time the fight has been postponed as it was originally scheduled to take place at UFC 251 in July, but on that occasion Burns tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the bout.
Instead, Usman found himself going up against Jorge Masvidal in a short-notice blockbuster, which he comfortably won via unanimous decision to extend his current winning streak to an impressive 16 fights – 12 of which have taken place inside the Octagon.
Along the way he’s defeated the likes of Colby Covington, Tyron Woodley, Rafael dos Anjos, Demian Maia and the aforementioned Masvidal and is currently placed at No.5 on the UFC’s overall pound-for-pound rankings.
As for Burns, he is currently riding a six-fight winning streak that’s seen him defeat notable fighters like Gunnar Nelson, Demian Maia and most recently Tyron Woodley to rise up to No.2 on the welterweight rankings.
with Usman vs. Burns ruled out, UFC 256 currently proceeds with a card that’s expected to feature a women’s featherweight title bout between current champ Amanda Nunes and Megan Anderson.
