Kelvin Gastelum Vs Tyron Woodley Set As UFC 183 Co-Main Event

A welterweight showdown between Kelvin Gastelum and Tyron Woodley has been pegged as the co-main event for UFC 183 on January 31st in Las Vegas.

Gastelum fought just this past weekend in the co-main event of UFC 180 and impressed with a first round submission stoppage against Jake Ellenberger.

This was the biggest win of the TUF 17 winner’s unbeaten 10-0 career to date, and with five victories in a row under his belt he’s now jumped up four places on the official welterweight rankings to No.7.

That ensured he’d get another high profile fight next time out, and it’s come around quickly in the shape of Woodley who’s currently ranked No.3 in the division.

Woodley’s UFC run is actually patchier than Gastelum’s, going 4-2 in the Octagon so far, though he’s generally been facing tougher opposition and has claimed some big scalps along the way, including stoppage victories due to strikes against Dong Hyun Kim, Carlos Condit and Josh Koscheck.

UFC 183 will of course be headlined by a middleweight ‘superfight’ between Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz which in itself guarantees this event will be one of the biggest of 2015, while other bouts expected to feature on the main card include Miesha Tate Vs Sara McMann, Tim Boetsch Vs Thales Leites and Thiago Alves Vs Jordan Mein.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
