Donald Cerrone has been trying to line up a blockbuster fight with Conor McGregor this year, but if that falls through it seems he might have another high-profile match-up in the works instead.
Backstage at UFC 235, Cerrone told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto about a conversation he’d had with none other than Nate Diaz while at the event that could pave the way for a fight between them.
“Cowboy: Nate, when you fighting again?” Cerrone reportedly asked the Stockton star.
“Diaz: It’s not me. UFC doing it.
Cowboy: Well, just so you know, I’ll fight you.
Diaz: S—. We’ll do it at 185. I’m done cutting weight.
Cowboy: Okay.”
Cerrone and Diaz have fought once before in the lightweight division back in 2011, which Diaz won by unanimous decision.
However, the terms of this rematch are rather unusual offer given that neither Diaz or Cerrone has ever fought at 185lbs. In fact, Cerrone recently dropped back down to 155lbs after having put together a 6-4 run at 170lbs.
As for Diaz, he has fought at welterweight in the past, including imfamously fighting McGregor twice at that weight. However, in total his 170lb record stands at just 3-3.
Diaz has had issues making the lightweight limit though, with his second last fight in that weight class against Rafael dos Anjos having to be fought at a catchweight of 160.6lbs after he came in 4.6lbs overweight on the scales.
A fight at welterweight would at least make some kind of sense for both parties, but if Diaz really is serious about only fighting at 185lbs then that would surely also rule out his chances of fighting Conor McGregor for a third time too, and would leave him with a lot of challenging fights with opponent’s more suited to that weight class instead.
However, it may just be that Diaz just isn’t that interested in fighting at all given that it’s now been almost exactly three years since he last stepped into the Octagon following his money-spinning back-to-back scrap with ‘The Notorious.’
