Pat Barry’s ground game proved to be his achilles heel again tonight at UFC Fight Night 33 as Soa Palelei got him down early in the first round and then proceeded to KO him with ground and pound.
Round One
Palelei goes for a takedown immediately and Barry gets the underhooks and stuffs it before circling away. Leg kick misses from Barry. He tries to go upstairs and that whistles by Palelei’s head.
Knee from Barry, but Palelei uses that to get a takedown. Barry immediately goes for a kimura attempt and is starting to get it in a workable position, but then loses it and Palelei smothers him from half guard.
Palelei moves into full mount and starts unleashing a barrage of ground and pound. Barry gets caught with a big punch in amongst it all that knocks him out and this one’s all over with only 2.09mins on the clock!
So, a much better performance from Palelei than in his Octagon debut. On the other hand, with three losses in last four fights, all coming by either KO or TKO, Barry’s future in the UFC must surely now be in doubt.
