Payton Talbott has called out Sean O’Malley after TKO’ing Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 332 on Saturday night.
“I just mopped the floor with two champions back-to-back, and now I want another one,” Talbott said in his post-fight interview. “Andrew Garfield, I mean, Sean O’Malley, you can’t run forever. Give the people what they want.”
The 31-year-old O’Malley has since responded to deny that he’s trying to avoid fighting the 28-year-old Talbott.
“4 out of last 7 fights have been against 3 of the greatest bantamweights of all time,” O’Malley wrote on social media, referring to Merab Dvalishvili, Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling. “Ain’t duckin no one.”
Talbott is often likened to former champion O’Malley in terms of their striking prowess, and he’s eager to now prove that he can beat him.
“We’ll just have to fight to really find out,” Talbott said of the stylistic match-up. “I personally like when people are similar to my body frame. I do a lot better. It’s kind of awkward punching midgets. The downward angle just gets a little bit awkward.
“Stylistically, I feel like we match up very well. I think I have a little bit more power. I think I have more muscle on my frame, and I think I’m just as quick because of my age.”
However, Talbott, who was unranked prior to Saturday night’s event, acknowledges that there’s also a real chance that O’Malley may be given a different opponent next due to being the No.3 contender in the division.
“He is a higher position than me, we’ll see where my rank goes,” Talbott told reporters. “I understand the position that I’m in, but it’s a fun fight. I think both of us should want it. He’s called the best striker in our division, and I’d like to put that to the test.”
