Raphael Assuncao Injured; Fight With Urijah Faber Canceled

UFC Fight Night 62 in Brazil is now seeking a new main event after Raphael Assuncao had to pull out of his recently announced rematch with Urijah Faber after it became clear his broken ankle wasn’t going to heal in time.

For the time being it looks as if Faber may still remain on the March 21st card and the UFC are currently seeking a new opponent for him.

If the UFC sticks with tradition they usually look to ensure there’s a Brazilian headlining their events in that region.

That means Faber could potentially be looking at either a rematch with current bantamweight No.8 Iuri Alcantara who’s gone on a three-fight winning streak since a unanimous decision loss to ‘The California Kid’ back in August of 2013, or perhaps the No.9 ranked Johnny Eduardo who’s 2-1 in the UFC to date.

Having said that, the UFC may have another plan up their sleeves, so we’ll just have to wait and see what they come up.

The UFC Fight Night 62 event, which takes place in Rio De Janerio, already has a number of other solid fights lined up including a co-main event featuring Demian Maia Vs Ryan LaFlare, Josh Thomson Vs Gilbert Burns and Erick Silva Vs Ben Saunders.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
