Raquel Pennington’s coaches came under fire on Saturday night after they were heard urging the bantamweight title challenger not to quite after she could be heard telling them, “I want to be done,” after the fourth round of her fight with Amanda Nunes.
By that stage Pennington’s nose was already in bad shape, but after being convinced by her corner to keep fighting it was subjected to more punishment, to the extent that it started pouring crimson onto the canvas at an alarming rate before the TKO finish mercifully came mid-way through the fifth round.
Since then many have criticized her coaches and suggested that it was their duty to protect the fighter and that they should have instantly agreed with her request to end the fight, but now Pennington’s fiancee Tecia Torres has revealed that they both fully endorse the coaches decision.
“Both us and our coaches agree with the decision made to go into the 5th round,” Torres stated on Twitter. “We know Raquel more than anyone else and know if we let her give up on herself going into the last round she would have always regretted it. She fought with heart and grit until the end.”
