Raoni Barcelos was rushed to hospital tonight after being knocked out by an awkward landing after being taken down by Raul Rosas Jr late in the fifth round of a back-and-forth war in the main event of UFC Fight Night 289.

Round One

The bantamweight main event is underway in Las Vegas.

Calf kick for Rosas. He comes up short on punches and then lands another low kick.

More short bursts of punches from Rosas, but Barcelos glides out of range. Uppercut threate from Barcelos.

Grazing left hook for Barcelos. Both men still dialling in the range. There’s a bit of a frenzied exchange in close and Barcelos loses his balance for a moment after what might have been an overhand from Rosas.

Barcelos trying to work a takedown attempt, but nothing doing for now. Straight left for Rosas.

Rosas really finding a home for his left hand now and Barcelos is starting to bleed.

Right hand for Barcelos and then drives in to land a good takedown. Rosas firing off hammerfists from his back and actually manages to back up Barcelos enough to get back to his feet.

Nice right and left from Barcelos. The Brazilian grabs a leg, but then opts to just press Rosas into the cage. Solid elbow from Barcelos and then backs off.

Barcelos with a couple of punches. He goes to the body, but Rosas comes bursting forward now with punches to back him up.

Round Two

Barcelos threatens with an uppercut. Rosas lands his straight left. Body punch for Barccelos. Well-timed jab from Barcelos put Rosas on his heels for a moment.

Body punch for Barcelos. Calf kick from Rosas. He lands it again. Body punch for Barcelos.

Barcelos blasts the body again while avoiding a punch. Now a grazing right hand. Rosas lands a couple of lefts.

Barcelos back to the body. Body kick for him. Left hand connects for Rosas. Body punch and a hook for Barcelos, but Rosas is looking to counter.

Barcelos tries for a takedown and almost gets it, but Rosas scrambles up.

Jabs from Barcelos. Now a left hook. Rosas trying to pressure, but Barcelos continues to invest in the body.

Solid connection for Barcelos. Now they are trading big punches at close quarters. Barcelos lands again. Barcelos works a takedown, but Rosas is quickly back up.

Barcelos kicks his leg out to put him down again. Rosas straight back up though and works some strikes from the clinch.

Back to striking range. Both men slugging it out now with good punches as they maintain a very high pace. Barcelos lands the final punch of the round cleanly.

Round Three

Left hand for Rosas. Jab from Barcelos. He lands to the body. Now a low kick. Another solid body punch.

Barcelos reaches for a leg then changes to a head kick attempt that just whistles past Rosas head.

Rosas with that left hand that’s been finding a home throughout the fight. He fires it out again. Body shot for Barcelos.

Rosas tries for a one-two and then clinches. Barcelos sweeps him to the mat. He’s able to take the back now and gets the body triangle locked in.

Rosas able to turn into him and now settles into Barcelos guard with over half the round remaining.

Rosas goes to half-guard and starts firing off aggressive ground-and-pound. Barcelos able to scramble to his feet though and now goes into the clinch against the cage on the other side of the Octagon.

Rosas gets free. Barcelos lands to the body. Jab for Rosas. Again a hard body punch from Barcelos.

Nice jab for Barcelos. Left hand for Rosas. Right hand from Barcelos to Rosas increasingly bloodied face. Barcelos clinches up, but they quickly separate.

Low kick for Rosas. One-two for him. Nice right hand for Barcelos. He lands a left too.

Barcelos able to clinch Rosas back and then sweeps him to the mat in the center of the Octagon. He goes to the back as Rosas is on his knees.

Rosas able to scramble to his feet as another hectic round draws to a close.

Round Four

Inside leg kick for Rosas. Now a jab for him. Calf kick. Body punch for Barcelos. Jab for Rosas, body shot for Barcelos.

Right hand for Barcelos close to the cage. Barcelos misses on a knee. He goes back to the body. Right hook from Rosas.

Barcelos slickly in and lands a clean takedown. He’s trying to latch onto the turtled Rosas’ back, but Rosas is able to stand.

Barcelos remains clinched up and drags him back to the mat. Rosas on all fours again, but is able to stand. Barcelos still clinched to his back.

Rosas drops down looking for a leg, but Barcelos rolls with him and is on top. Barcelos goes for a rear-naked choke. Rosas looking tired, but seems relaxed as far as the choke goes.

Barcelos adjusts and then drops down aggressively with the rear-naked choke in tighter now. Rosas still seems to be ok though.

Barcelos relaxes and then commits to it again, but he’s not able to squeeze it enough to get the finish.

Round Five

Rosas jumping up and down and motioning to the crowd before the final round starts as he shows his energy reserves.

Rosas comes close with a knee. Now a jumping knee also just comes up short. Barcelos drives in and lands a takedown.

Rosas gets his legs up, but Barcelos steers clea of that and works around to the back as Rosas goes to all fours.

Rosas back up. He lands a knee this time, but Barcelos is ok. From the clinch Rosas lands a good knee to the body.

Barcelos clinches against the cage. Rosas reverses that and then lands a takedown. Rosas is suddenly backing away with his hand raised – Barcelos is out cold! Even with replays it’s hard to tell exactly what happened there, but Barcelos seems to glance his head awkwardly off the cage on the way down. And that’s it, a KO win for Rosas Jr at 1:38mins of the fifth round.

Worrying scenes now as Barcelos is still down and being attended to by medical staff as the cameras look the other way. There’s real concern for him here and he’s soon carried out on a stretcher and will be rushed straight to hospital. Our best wishes to him and hopefully there will be a positive update soon.

That’s a really unfortunate ending to what was easily one of the best fights of the year, with both men giving their all from start to finish. Barcelos was actually ahead on the scorecards heading into the 5th round, but Rosas Jr had a great performance too.
