The UFC have announced that a welterweight scrap between Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown will headline UFC On FOX 12 in San Jose on July 26th.
And spicing up an already exciting match-up, the winner of this bout is almost certain to be given a title shot, with Lawler currently ranked at No.3 and Brown No.5 in the official welterweight rankings.
Lawler is coming fresh off a third round TKO victory over Jake Ellenberger at UFC 173 this past weekend, and the fight with Brown will mark his fourth fight in nine months as he looks to capitalize on the momentum he’s built since moving down to welterweight after rejoining the UFC last year.
Speaking of momentum, few can hold a candle to Brown in that department over the course of the past couple of years as ‘The Immortal’ has gone on a seven fight winning streak, finishing all but one of those fights by either KO or TKO. Remarkable stuff really for a fighter who looked close to being ejected from the UFC in 2011 after losing three of his previous four fights.
this fight is pretty much a win-win for the UFC as it’s got ‘Fight Of The Night’ written all over it and whoever emerges victorious will produce a marketable challenger for the title.
Of course Lawler only just fought for the title against Johny Hendricks back in March, but the fight was so closely contested and entertaining that no-one is likely to object to a repeat performance later in the year.
With Lawler Vs Brown now installed as the main event, a light-heavyweight fight between Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira moves to the co-main event slot, while Josh Thomson Vs Michael Johnson also looks to feature on the main card, potentially alongside Jorge Masvidal Vs Daron Cruickshank.
