Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza’s time in the UFC has come to an end after suffering a broken arm in his submission loss to Andre Muniz on Saturday night.
The fight had been the final one of Jacare’s current contract with the promotion, and they’ve opted to now part ways with the 41-year-old.
Regardless of his contractual status, there had been question marks over Jacare’s future in the UFC following his latest defeat given that he had now gone four fights without a win, and indeed had only earned two victories from his past eight Octagon outings.
It’s a far cry from the Brazilian star’s heyday when he was a Strikeforce champion and then became one of the leading middleweight contenders in the UFC for several years, defeating the likes of Chris Weidman, Vitor Belfort, Gegard Mousasi, Yushin Okami and Derek Brunson.
However, Jacare never quite managed to seal a title shot at 185lbs before his form started to decline.
It’s not clear yet whether Souza plans to keep fighting or not, but for the time being he’s expected to be out of action for around six months while he heals from the surgery he’s undergone to help fix the broken arm he suffered against Muniz.
Jacare bows out of the UFC with an overall 9-7 record, while his career numbers now stand at 20-10 (+1nc).
