A major welterweight fight between two of the division’s top talents, Rory MacDonald and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson will headline UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, Canada on June 18th.

The 26 year-old MacDonald will be returning to action for the first time since his unsuccessful attempt to take the welterweight title from Robbie Lawler in a ‘Fight of The Year’ war back in July of last year which he eventually lost by TKO early in the fifth round.

That brought an end to a three fight winning streak and was only the third loss of the Canadian’s 21 fight professional career.

MacDonald remains ranked as the No.1 contender in the division, while Thompson is just one place behind after solidifying his status as one of the best in the welterweight ranks with a 3.31min destruction of former champ Johny Hendricks last month, TKO’ing him after a one-sided beatdown.

The 33 year-old Thompson is now riding a six fight winning streak and a win over MacDonald would surely lead to a well-earned title shot.

MacDonald Vs Thompson was officially announced at yesterday’s UFC: Unstoppable press conference and is the only fight so far confirmed for UFC Fight Night 89 which is expected to air on FOX Sports 1.
