Roy Nelson Vs Alistair Overeem Set For UFC 185

A heavyweight clash between Roy Nelson and Alistair Overeem has been chalked up for UFC 185 in Dallas on March 14th.

Nelson is coming off a tough knockout loss to Mark Hunt back in September of last year in Japan. That was his third loss in his past four fights having also picked up decision losses to both Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic while also earning a KO win against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

That’s resulted in ‘Big Country’ dropping to No.9 on the UFC’s official heavyweight rankings, but with the division being in a state of flux at the moment a win against Overeem could quickly see him rise back up the ladder.

Overeem is currently two place behind Nelson at No.11 after earning a much needed first round knockout victory against Stefan Struve at the final ‘UFC On FOX’ event of 2014 in December.

‘The Reem’s’ place on the UFC roster had been under threat prior to that after he’d experienced a similar slump in form as Nelson, also losing three out of his past four Octagon encounters.

Making matters worse for the Dutchman however was the fact he’d suffered two knockouts and a TKO in the process against Antonio Silva, Travis Browne and Ben Rothwell respectively.

That led to fears that Overeem’s chin had completely deserted him, and if that’s true then a heavy-handed slugger like Nelson could expose him yet again. Truth be told though this looks like a fight that both fighters will belive they have a good chance of winning.

Nelson Vs Overeem is the second major fight booked for UFC 185 which will headlined by a lightweight title fight between Anthony Pettis and Rafael dos Anjos.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
