A heavyweight fight between Roy Nelson and Stipe Miocic has been announced for UFC 161.
The bout appears to have been made in order to fill in the gap on the main card resulting from Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland’s interim bantamweight title fight being canceled due to an injury.
Nelson had been on stand-by as a potential replacement for Mark Hunt at this weekend’s UFC 160 event if he was unable to make it in time to Las Vegas due to Visa issues, but that matter has now been cleared up and so ‘Big Country’ wasn’t required.
Nelson is currently on a three fight winning streak in the UFC, picking up wins over Dave Herman, Matt Mitrione and Cheick Kongo – all three by either first round KO or TKO.
Meanwhile, Miocic is coming off a TKO loss to Stefan Struve back in September, but prior to that had held a perfect 9-0 record including three victories inside the UFC’s Octagon.
Due to Barao’s injury UFC 161, which takes place on June 15th, will now be headlined by a light-heavyweight fight between Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans.
