UFC Event Heading To The Philippines On May 16th

The UFC have announced that they’ll be hosting their first ever event in the Philippines on May 16th.

The ‘UFC Fight Night’ show will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manilla and air live on the UFC Fight Pass service.

“We are thrilled to be kicking off our Asia event calendar in Manila this year,” said UFC Asia exec Ken Berger. “The UFC has a loyal and passionate fan base in the Philippines and we’re looking forward to bringing the very best of MMA to Manila for the first time. We have found a great event partner in SM Lifestyle Entertainment inc. and are excited that the SM Mall of Asia Arena will be home to a historic UFC event that fans will remember for years to come.”

At this stage no fights have been announced for the event, but all going well it’s almost certain that ‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine’ Mark Munoz will be on the card given that he’s the countries best known MMA star.

Munoz has to take care of business against Caio Magalhaes at UFC 184 on February 28th first though, and that might be easier said than done given that the 36 year-old Munoz has lost three of his last four fights, while Magalhaes has won four in a row. Having said that, Munoz faced much stiffer competition during that spell.

Win or lose though, as long as he emerges without a serious injury then he can count on a high profile bout on the card in Manila.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
