TJ Grant sealed a lightweight title shot this evening at UFC 160 with an ultra-impressive first round TKO victory over Gray Maynard.
A few left hands connect for Maynard in the opening minute. An uppercut gets through soon after and then another couple of blows that back Grant up.
Right hand for Grant lands, Maynard returns fire. Grant connects again, working his way into the fight nicely.
A shot lands for Grant and Maynard backs up looking a little dazed. Grant follows up on it and Maynard appears to be in trouble.
Grant knows it and keeps the pressure up, landing a piston right hand that drops Maynard. He gets back up, but he’s being given no room to recover and Grant lands a hard knee and more punches that buckle Maynard’s legs again.
Maynard’s trying desparately to scramble away against the cage, but the punches just keep coming and the ref swoops in to put him out of misery.
So, a huge TKO win for Grant, stopping the traditionally very hard to beat Maynard in just 2.07mins of the first round.
This result, Grant’s fifth win in a row, leaves no doubt at all that he is well worth the title shot he’s just earned against current champion Ben Henderson later this year.
