December’s ‘UFC On FOX 9’ event will feature a co-main event bantamweight showdown between Urijah Faber and Rory Macdonald.
Faber is currently on a three fight winning streak at 135lbs that’s saw him take out three top contenders in Ivan Menjivar, Scott Jorgensen and Iuri Alcantara to prove beyond a doubt that he’s still one of the elite fighters in the weight class.
Despite recently losing out in a title tussle with interim champ Renan Barao, McDonald is also considered in the ‘elite’ category and at 22 years of age he’s got unlimited potential. He’s also coming off an impressive victory over Brad Pickett just last month that saw him scoop up both ‘Fight of The Night’ and ‘Submission Of The Night’ so his confidence is running high.
Overall this is a very nice match-up between two of the most entertaining fighters around and should be a great spectacle on FOX.
Interestingly this wasn’t the UFC’s original plan. They had initially been looking to pair up Faber with Frankie Edgar as coaches for TUF 19, but Edgar turned it down after refusing to move down to 135lbs and was instead matched up with BJ Penn for the next edition of the long-running reality show.
Faber’s team-mate Chad Mendes is also being rumored for a fight on the end-of-year FOX card though as yet an opponent as not been announced for the high-flying featherweight.
