Raul Rosas Jr added a major new feather to his cap last night by submitting Colby Covington in just 37 seconds in a Hype FC submission grappling match over in Rome, Italy.
The recently turned 22-year-old Rosas Jr had only agreed to the match-up a day earlier after Dillon Danis withdrew from his bout with Covington.
Rosas Jr, who competes at bantamweight, showed no fear against former interim UFC welterweight champion, despite being a big underdog in the match-up.
RRJ quickly managed to secure a takedown and stayed in control as they scrambled, before managing to sink in a fight-ending rear-naked choke at the 37 second mark.
It’s been quite the year for Rosas Jr, who is less than six weeks removed from a remarkable back-and-forth war against Raoni Barcelos, which he won by in the 5th round after his opponent alarmingly suffered a sudden loss of consciousness.
That marked Rosas Jr’s sixth win in a row, taking his career record to 13-1, while rising to No.8 in the Meta bantamweight rankings.
As for Covington, back in May he opted to leave the UFC after a disappointing run of form, but he’s been very active in the freestyle wrestling promotion RAF this year, going 5-0 against a string of high-profile fighters like Luke Rockhold, Dillon Danis, Chris Weidman, Arman Tsarukyan and Belal Muhammad.
