Weight Issues Force Kelvin Gastelum And John Lineker To Move Up Divisions

Repeated weight cut issues have resulted in the UFC forcing both Kelvin Gastelum and John Lineker to move up a division following last night’s UFC 183 event.

“(Lineker) is going to have to move up,” White confirmed at the post-fight press conference and also confirmed that, “Gastelum’s a 185-pounder now.”

TUF winner Gastelum lost for the first time his career by split decision against Tryon Woodley at the event just 24 hours after he came in a whopping 9lbs over the welterweight limit.

That’s the second time he’s missed the 171lb mark in his six fight stint in the promotion, but has had other weight problems along the way, so he’ll now have to compete in the middleweight division instead.

Lineker came in 4lbs over the flyweight limit on Friday and that’s now the fourth time in his UFC career that he’s come in to heavy for a fight, so understandably the promotion’s patience with him has finally worn out and he’ll be forced to compete at bantamweight now.

It’s a fair ruling on the UFC’s part, but a tough one to swallow for the Brazilian who’s victory against Ian McCall last night had put him on the verge of a title shot at 125lbs.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
