Alex Morono was able to outstrike David Zawada over three competitive rounds tonight at UFC Fight Night 191 to earn a unanimous decision victory.
Round One:
Right hand for Zawada. He misses on a leg kick attempt. Zawada steps in with a nice left hook. He goes to the body now and tries to land upstairs after without success.
Morono feeling out with the jab. Zawada wades forward and lands an uppercut. Nice right hook counter from Morono.
Into the clinch and Morono tries to keep the fight against the cage but is unable to. Knee landed and then they split apart with a punch from Morono.
Body punch from Zawada. Morono presses forward and lands a big punch. Zawada steps into range and eats a punch for his troubles.
Missed spinning kick from Zawada. Punch lands to the chest from Morono. Body-head work from Zawada. Jab for Morono.
Jab for Zawada now. Morono tries to land a series of punches, but doesn’t find a home for them. Jab for Zawada. Solid straight for Morono.
A couple of hard uppercuts in close from Morono now. Body punch and one upstairs from Zawada. Body kick from Morono after nice head movement from Zawada.
Round Two:
Punch from Zawada sends Morono backwards. He keeps up the pressure and lands another blow that knocks Morono off-balance again, but then he swings back, though doesn’t find the mark.
Short punches in close from Morono and Zawada lands one again. Zawada to the body and looks for the uppercut too.
Straight right from Zawada as he steps into range. Straight right for Morono. Body punch from Zawada and gets a grazing punch in return.
Left hand from Morono. Two-piece from Zawada but a more powerful punch from Morono lands in return. Morono pressuring more now as the fight goes on and lands a nice jab.
Zawada comes forward with punches but eats one from Morono instead. Zawada lunges into a body punch.
Punch for Morono, but Zawada counters him effectively this time with a punch upstairs. Zawada gets in close and lands a few short punches, then moves back out.
Jab for Morono. Body punch from Zawada. Left hand for him. Morono pumps out the jab and Zawada throws back. Kick from Morono.
Zawada tags Morono with a punch and Morono blasts him with a hook on the counter to end the round.
Round Three:
Zawada stumbles to the mat off what might have been a punch there, but gets straight back up. Morono swings for the fences. Zawada seems ok though.
Morono with a takedown now. Zawada to his knees and Morono is on him. He tries to take the back, Zawada scrambles over to the cage and stands back up with Morono body-locked. Zawada with a few knees and then an elbow as he breaks free though.
One-two for Zawada. Spinning kick to the body from Morono. Now a spinning backfist that landed cleanly.
Two solid body punches for Zawada. Zawada with a nice jab and Morono hurls out haymakers but misses.
Another stiff jab from Zawada, then goes back to the body. Olbique kick for Zawada. More body work from Zawada. He tries to land a knee there too.
Stepping jab for Zawada. Body punch. More volume from Zawada late in the round here. Clipping jab for Zawada. Series of body punches and then a takedown attempt, but Morono goes down threatening with a guillotine choke.
30 seconds to go. Both men careful from this position and then Zawada tries to make a move to secure top position, but Morono slips away from his clutches and gets to his back as they stand, then tries to go for a takedown of his own, but doesn’t quite secure it until after the round ends.
Decision:
Competitive fight then, but the more telling, damaging blows were being landed by Morono over the course of the fight and helps him secure a clean unanimous decision victory (30-27 x3).
