Alexa Grasso was able to secure a unanimous decision victory over Viviane Araujo in the main event of UFC Fight Night 212 tonight in Las Vegas.
Round One:
The flyweight main event is underway in Las Vegas!
Jab for Araujo to start. Short flurry of punches from Grasso. she misses on a low kick. Jab again fro mAraujo.
Right hand gets through for Grasso. Now a left from Araujo. Head kick attempt from Grasso misses. Araujo lands another punch.
Solid left hand for Grasso. Exchange of punches in close. Nice left hand for Grasso. Both working off the jab here.
Inside leg kick from Grasso. Araujo tries to drive into a takedown, but Grasso defends nicely.
Solid jab from Araujo. She lands it again. Nice leg kick from Grasso off a punch. Double jab for her.
Araujo suddenly ducks into a nice takedown, but as soon as they hit the mat Grasso reverses her. They scramble and Araujo gets back up and presses Grasso into the cage. Grasso with a glancing knee upstairs from here though as the round draws to a close.
Round Two:
Both land at the same time with the jab, with Araujo’s landing a bit harder. However then Grasso throws a nice head kick.
Another exchange of strikes. Grasso swinging hard but misses. Nice one-two from Grasso. jab for Araujo.
Inside leg kick from Grasso and goes for another. Nice right hand from Grasso on the counter. Grasso misses on a punch and Araujo throws a couple of punches in return. –
Now Araujo lands a good takedown. Araujo able to get some good control time on top from here in half-guard.
Araujo eventually passing to side control, but Grasso scrambles back to her feet well. Nice jabs from Grasso now and a right hand follows.
Another right connects for Grasso as she turns up the heat to try and regain the momentum after that takedown. Nice long jab from Grasso. Leg kick for Grasso, but eats a leg kick in the process. Both ladies trade punches. One-two lands solidly for Grasso. Final seconds of the round and Araujo goes for a takedown and partially gets it before the horn sounds.
Round Three:
One-two for Araujo. She fakes a takedown attempt. A couple of punches upstairs for Grasso. Jabs from Araujo.
Now Grasso with a double jab and then one to the body. Araujo lands to the body. leg kick for Grasso and punches in response from Araujo.
Body punch from Grasso. Several punches from Araujo. Now a leg kick. Araujo landing the jab. Power right gets through for Grasso.
Now a one-two for Grasso and threatens with a head kick attempt. Jab again from her. Body punch from Grasso and a high kick attempt. This time Araujo tries to fire back with aggressive strikes of her own.
Leg kick from Grasso. Nice right hand now. Grasso blocks a couple of punches from Araujo. Araujo misses on a front kick upstairs.
One-two for Grasso. she lands another with a bit more behind it. Another punch from her, but Araujo lands a jab and right hand before the round ends.
Round Four:
Head kick straight away from Grasso is just blocked in time. Araujo looking for a kick now. Grasso works the jab.
Inside leg kick for Araujo. Left hand for Grasso. Jab from Araujo. Combination lands for Grasso.
Solid punches land for Araujo. She looks to land a body punch and Grasso lands a counter over the top.
Nice left hook for Grasso. Leg kick for her and comes up short with a straight right. One-two from Araujo comes off the guard.
Punch for Grasso. Left hand lands for Araujo. Head kick attempt from Araujo is blocked followed by a left hand.
Araujo looking to strike but eats a nice right hand counter from Grasso. Grazing right hand from Grasso. Leg kick from her. Araujo firing out the jab but Grasso returning fire.
Araujo goes for a takedown attempt against the cage, but Grasso staying upright for now. 30 seconds of the round remaining. Foot stomps from Araujo as Grasso is trying to work a few knees to the body.
Grasso is able to push away in the final seconds of the round.
Round Five:
Nice right hand for Grasso and a leg kick, but Araujo lands a punch too. Both fighters still fresh in the final round here.
Punch lands for Araujo. Right hand from Grasso. Uppercut and a punch behind it for Grasso.
Good straight right for Grasso and Araujo drives into the clinch against the cage. Grasso lands a couple of knees to the body as she fights to stay on her feet.
Grasso able to break away. Jab for her and then an inside low kick. Double jab from Grasso, but not a clean contact.
Inside leg kick for Grasso. Outside one for Araujo. Araujo feeling out with the jab to maintain her range. She lands a right hand now. Another lands.
Front kick to the body from Araujo. Grasso moves and then lands a right hand. Head kick attempt from Araujo almost caught Grasso off-guard.
Araujo looks for a takedown, but Grasso stepped away from it. Double jab for Grasso. Missed front kick from Araujo.
Grasso steps forward with a short flurry that lands. Araujo drives into the clinch against the cage. Short hammerfists from Grasso as Araujo is also looking to land sort punches in the final seconds.
Decision:
A close, competitive fight from start to finish then, but Grasso seemed to edge the output and landed the cleaner strikes for the most part, leading her to a unanimous decision victory (50-45, 49-46 x2).
