Bill Algeo got the better of Alexander Hernandez over three rounds of fighting tonight at UFC Fight Night 229 to earn a unanimous decision win.
Round One:
Algeo feels out with a few kicks from range that don’t find the mark, then Hernandez loads up on a high kick that misses.
Algeo threatening with a knee as Hernandez is coming forward on the attack. Algeo with his own head kick attempt that’s blocked. Hernandez with a leg kick.
Another leg kick for Hernandez. Algeo head kick is blocked. He continues to press forward with a couple of more strikes including a spinning kick.
Nice lunging punch to the body from Hernandez. Calf kick for Algeo. Two punches land for Hernandez.
Kick for Algeo knocks Hernandez backwards off-balance for a moment. Head kick attempt from Hernandez that’s blocked. He fakes for a takedown too.
Body punch from mHernandez. Double-jab to the body now. Hook kick attempt from Algeo then lands a calf kick.
Another solid body punch from Hernandez. Kick from Algeo comes off the upper arm. Algeo starts to up the output of his kicks late in the round, working to the body and legs.
Round Two:
Body kick for Hernandez. He lands a punch to the body and then one upstairs. Overhand right from Algeo. Body kick for Algeo.
Jab followed by a knee from Algeo. Hernandez punching to the body. Body kick from Algeo. Body punch from him. Hernandez continuing to got to the midsection. Algeo throws a punch and his thumb lands to the eye and forces a stoppage for him to recover.
They get back to it and Hernandez punches to the head. Algeo threatens with a head kick, but Hernandez blocks it just in time.
Hernandez picking up the aggression now as he marches forward looking to land with power. Kick from Algeo.
Hernandez blasts Hernandez with a big right hand. Leg kick from Algeo. Step-in left from him.
Left hook from Algeo catches Hernandez off-guard and drops him! Hernandez gets up quickly though and is able to clinch up and press Algeo into the cage. Shoulder shrug from Hernandez. Algeo able to break free.
Hernandez just misses on a power hook. Now Algeo misses on a wide hook too. Knee from Algeo. Now a body kick. Push kick to the body too.
Punch lands for Hernandez. Another push kick from Algeo. Head kick from Hernandez seemed to partially get through, but Algeo shakes his head unphased. Hernandez with two more punches as the round ends.
Round Three:
Hernandez closing the distance and looking to clinch up against the cage early in the final round. Algeo able to defend and break away though.
Nice step in punch from Algeo, but Hernandez threatens on the counter. Side kick from Algeo. Kick to the body too.
Body punch from Algeo. Question-mark kick from Algeo landed, but only lightly. Hernandez still applying pressure, but Algeo is staying active even off the back foot.
Leg kick and a couple of punches from range for Algeo. Hernandez with a big right over the top. stepping left hand for Algeo.
Algeo stays busy with light punches and kicks. Body punch from Hernandez. Left hand for Algeo. Hard straight-right from Hernandez.
Push kick for Algeo. Side kick now to the body. Left hand gets through for Hernandez. Jab for him. Now a body kick and tries to target the body with punches too. Knee to the body from Algeo. Final 15 seconds and both are landing strikes. Algeo with a late takedown and they scramble back to their feet as the final horn sounds.
Decision:
This was a competitive fight, but Algeo was just a little bit more active offensively and also scored a knockdown in the second round, while showing off a sturdy chin at times too en-route to a unanimous decision victory (30-27 x3).
