Chris Weidman Reveals He Needs Second Surgery On Broken Leg

Chris Weidman has revealed the unfortunate news that he’s going to have another surgery on his broken leg after the healing process didn’t go according to plan.

“I’m actually getting another surgery, I just found out,” Weidman said on Sirius XM’s ‘MMA Today’ show. “I’m getting another surgery, most likely on Aug. 11. They’re going to have to plate the fibula bone because I guess it’s considered a non-union so the bones aren’t healing the way it’s supposed to, which kind of sucks.”

It’s been three months since Weidman broke his leg just 17 seconds into his fight against Uriah Hall at UFC 261, and things had seemed to be going well at first, but about three weeks ago he says he started to notice that things weren’t improving at the pace they had been previously and he was experiencing pain when he walked, so eventually that led to him seeking expert opinions about how to proceed.

3D scans then pinpointed a problem area and left him with the tough news that he’ll have to go under the knife again is obviously hard to hear, but the former middleweight champion is doing his best to stay positive regardless of the setback.

“I did expect setbacks and some issues with this type of traumatic injury. I’ve been through a lot. At the end of the day, I’m a positive person to begin with. Not that I don’t have moments of negativity and just laziness, lack of motivation but I’m usually a glass half-full type of person. So I think that helps.”

According to his doctor, the recovery time for the second surgery is likely to be an additional two months, and with a lengthy rehab to follow it certainly looks like it’ll be well over a year in total after the injury before Weidman could think about competing again.
