UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor appears to be firmly focused on a boxing mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr later this year, but it appears he does still have plans beyond that back in the Octagon.
McGregor revealed his interest in a third fight with his rival Nate Diaz yesterday after watching a new ‘UFC Soundwaves’ video from the promotion that offered up unseen footage of the two star’s second clash in the cage last year, which ‘The Notorious’ won by split decision.
“This is amazing video of a great chapter in my career,” wrote on Twitter. “I look forward to the trilogy fight down the road. It was a hell of a fight!”
It’s heartening to hear McGregor talk of fighting in the Octagon as there has been some concern recently that McGregor might just hang up his gloves after his money-spinning boxing match with Mayweather, assuming that it does eventually come to fruition.
That being said, it perhaps won’t be music to the ears of the lightweight divisions top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, who will no doubt be left wondering if they also feature in McGregor’s plans or not.
Meanwhile, despite giving no indication of when he’d like the fight to take place, his comments may convince Diaz that it’s in his best interests just to remain on the sidelines until the trilogy bout.
The Stockton native has already turned down a fight with former 155lb champion Eddie Alvarez, and as things stand it’s difficult to see who else the UFC could offer him other than McGregor that would coax the 31-year-old back into action.
