The long wait to get official news on Conor McGregor’s comeback fight may almost be over according to the Irish superstar, who has stated that he’ll announce the details on New Years Day.
“I will be announcing my fight date and opponent on New Years Day, 2024,” McGregor wrote on X.
“The Greatest Comeback in Sports History,” he also posted soon afterwards.
Michael Chandler was always intended to be McGregor’s comeback opponent after they agreed to serve as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter show last year, and so he still remains the frontrunner here.
That being said, after sitting out for over a year waiting on the fight to be made official, Chandler has become increasingly uneasy about the situation and even within the last few days had been voicing his concerns that McGregor was angling to face an “easier” opponent like Nate Diaz or Tony Ferguson instead.
Meanwhile, fans will no doubt be eager to finally see a resolution to the endless speculation about whether McGregor will be used as the star attraction for the upcoming UFC 300 pay-per-view event in April, or whether Dana White’s previous hints that he may be held back for a pay-per-view in the summer may prove to be true instead.
The 35-year-old McGregor hasn’t set foot in the Octagon since breaking his leg in the 1st round of his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July of 2021, having been TKO’d by his rival in their previous encounter earlier that year.
