Dana White has had his differences with Colby Covington, but after watching him completely dominate Robbie Lawler for five rounds at UFC On ESPN 5 this past weekend he’s only too happy to give im the next shot at Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title.
“That’s why I put Covington on ESPN against a guy like Lawler,” White said told reporters after the latest episode of the Contender Series on Tuesday in Las Vegas. “You can say whatever you want about Covington, you don’t like him, you don’t this, that, or whatever — he put on a clinic against Lawler, who is a beast. Lawler’s been in all the big fights, former world champion, hits like a truck and Colby completely shut him down.
“His cardio was impressive and the way that he beat Lawler was even more impressive.”
Usman also looked dominant in his decisive win on the scorecards against Tyron Woodley back in March to seize the title, so it should be quite a fight when it does eventually take place, though that won’t be any time soon as ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is still recovering from double hernia surgery, which is likely to keep him out until some stage later in the year.
