Following last night’s TUF 28 Finale event Dana White revealed that he would like to see Conor McGregor have a rematch with one of the lightweight division’s leading contenders Dustin Poirier next.
“The ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone fight has never, ever been discussed,” White told reporters at a post-fight media scrum. “That’s completely not true. I said the fight that makes sense right now is probably Poirier. And then Tony gets a shot at the title and the two winners fight each other. But I’m not sure exactly on a date when Conor is gonna fight yet. We have to get through this Nevada State Athletic Commission stuff first.”
McGregor previously fought Poirier back in 2014 when he was still working his way up the featherweight ranks, TKO’ing him in under two minutes.
However, while ‘The Notorious’ has since risen to fame and fortune since, becoming the featherweight and lightweight champion along the way, ‘The Diamond’ has also impressed.
Poirier moved back up to lightweight after that defeat and has only lost once in 10 fights since, with his current winning streak including victories over the likes of Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez, all of whom he stopped via strikes.
McGregor previously signalled his interest in fighting a leading contender who could put him back in line for a title shot if an immediate rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov wasn’t possible, and since it seems that White wants the Russian ace to fight Tony Ferguson next then McGregor Vs Poirier II could well be the next match-up for the Irish superstar.
