Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor Trilogy Fight Could Happen In May

The latest word is that a trilogy fight between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor may happen as soon as May of this year.

That’s the rumor according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, who says that McGregor wants to return in May and attempt to avenge his recent TKO loss to ‘The Diamond’.

“So now it looks, two weeks later, we’re going back in the direction of DP vs Conor 3,” Helwani said. “Now the big question is, belt or not? That seems to be up in the air. I think there is a chance they still don’t make it for the belt.”

Heading down this road certainly would add even more confusion regarding the lightweight belt at a time when Khabib Nurmagomedov has given every indication that he doesn’t intend to return to the Octagon, yet has still not vacated the title.

Assuming he did step down then Poirier vs. Charles Oliveira would have been the fight to make, but he appears more interested in meeting McGregor for a third time and had already suggested that a fight between Oliveira and Michael chandler could establish a new champion in the mean time.

Justin Gaethje would likely also be eager to stake a claim if there was a title up for grabs, so it’s a complicated situation and a lot of details will still need to be ironed out before we know for sure what’s going to happen next.
