Germaine de Randamie outstruck Raquel Pennington tonight at UFC Fight Night 139 to earn a decision victory.
Round One:
Pennington with a series of jabs to start quickly. Leg kick for De Randamie. leg kick for Pennington now. Superwoman punch attempt from Pennington.
De Randamie lands a punch and now ‘Rocky’ is looking to get into the clinch and presses her opponent against the cage.
Pennington not doing too much from the position here, but is controlling De Randamie. However, De Randamie manages to reverse the position and immediately goes for a knee from the thai clinch.
Hard knees from De Randamie to the body and ‘Rocky’ doesn’t like that. Uppercut from Pennington. She manages to get the reversal to take control of the clinch again.
Again she doesn’t do a whole lot with the position other than a couple of punches and they separate. De Randamie lands a hard one-two and Pennington immediately starts swooping into the clinch again and ends the round there.
Round Two:
Leg kick for Pennington. She tries to clinch, but De Randamie sidesteps and takes the clinch advantage, landing a good knee in the process. A punch upstairs too.
Back to striking range. De Randamie looking the better striker at this stage. Body punch from De Randamie. Pennington’s punches coming up a bit short as De Randamie works her superior reach.
Head kick attempt from Pennington is blocked. Kick for De Randamie. Right hand for De Randamie. Now the jab. Pennington seems a little out-of-sorts here.
Very nice counter jab from De Randamie off a leg kick from Pennington. Pennington manages to get into the clinch. She works a few punches, but really would like to get a takedown. However, so far De Randamie is doing a nice job staying on her feet.
Nice elbow for Pennington. Body punches for De Randamie and Pennington returns with a hook. De Randamie returns fire and gets out of the clinch.
Pennington soon into the clinch again and hoists De Randamie up momentarily, but still can’t land the takedown.
Round Three:
Jabs for Pennington as De Randamie works a leg kick. Another leg kick for De Randamie. Uppercut for Pennington. Another leg kick for De Randamie.
Head kick attempt from De Randamie just whistles over her opponent’s head. inside leg kick for De Randamie. Front kick to the body for De Randamie now. nice left and an uppercut behind it from her. Leg kick for Pennington.
Left hook and a leg kick from De Randamie. Pennington into the clinch against the cage with a little less than half the round remaining.
Light strikes from Pennington that are little more than a nuisance for her opponent. Pennington tries for the takedown, but is unable to get anything going and the ref opts to separate them due to a knee to the groin.
Right hand from De Randamie on the restart then ‘Rocky’ barrels into the clinch again. De Randamie landing a few strikes with her back against the cage.
De Randamie breaks free with 10 seconds to go and lands a big leg kick. She finds space and works a head kick attempt.
Decision:
De Randamie clearly got the better of the striking exchanges here and shrugged off the lackluster Pennington’s takedown attempts to earn herself a clean sweep on the judges unanimous decision scorecards (30-27 x3).
