Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz have signed up for a rematch on June 1st on pay-per-view, but this time they’ll be competing in the boxing ring.
Masvidal and Diaz previously locked horns in the inaugural battle for the symbolic ‘BMF’ title back in the Octagon back in November of 2019, and on that occasion it was ‘Gamebred’ who emerged the convincing winner via TKO after he outstruck Diaz until the doctor waved the fight off at the end of the third round.
At that stage Masvidal was at the peak of his fame, having also KO’d Darren Till and landed a 4 second flying knee knockout finish over Ben Askren that same year.
However, Masvidal was unable to keep his momentum going after that and went on to suffer four losses in a row, including back-to-back losses against Kamaru Usman followed by decision losses to Colby Covington and Gilbert Burns, leading him to announce his retirement from the sport last year.
As for Diaz, following his loss to Masvidal he was also beaten by Leon Edwards, but then rebounded with a submission finish of Tony Ferguson in 2022, before opting not to sign a new deal with the UFC, where he had spent the majority of his career up to that point.
Since then Diaz has gone on to fight Jake Paul in a lucrative, but ultimately unsuccessful boxing debut, losing out by unanimous decision.
Diaz has signalled his interest in potentially returning to the UFC later this year, but first he looks to settle what he sees as unfinished business with Masvidal first.
