A flyweight fight between Joseph Benavidez and Ray Borg is believed to be in the works for UFC 229 in Las Vegas on October 6th.
Benavidez returned to action after a year-and-a-half out in June and suffered his first loss since 2013, coming out on the wrong end of a split decision against Sergio Pettis.
Until that moment, Benavidez had only ever lost to long-time champion Demetrious Johnson in the division during his seven-year run in the promotion, and with ‘Mighty Mouse’ having just lost the title at last that will surely give the 34-year-old renewed focus heading into his next fight – particularly as he already holds a split decision win over the new champion Henry Cejudo from back in 2016.
As for Borg, he’s coming off a title loss to the aforementioned Johnson last year, and is now looking to rebuild for another push for the belt.
Borg only holds a 5-3 record in the UFC though, with his biggest wins coming over the likes of Louis Smolka and Jussier Formiga, so really he needs a win over a big name like Benavidez to put himself in with a realistic chance of starting to work his way into the title picture again.
Benavidez Vs Borg joins a UFC 229 card that’s expected to be headlined by the biggest fight of the year as Conor McGregor takes on lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
