Former WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje made a big impact in his UFC debut last weekend and now the word is that the promotion are looking to pair him up with Eddie Alvarez next.
MMAfighting’s Ariel Helwani broke the story yesterday and further claimed that the two might even coach on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter as well.
If so that shows just how impressed the UFC brass were with Gaethje’s performanced on Friday night, where he survived being rocked several times by Michael Johnson and then staged an impressive comeback to claim a TKO victory deep in the second round.
Fans of the fighter during his WSOF run will already know this is business as usual for Gaethje, and given that he also shone on the mic after what some were declaring to be the best fight of the year so far, he’s an obvious fighter for the UFC to get behind now as a potential future star.
As for Alvarez, a year ago he was the UFC’s lightweight champion, but he’s since lost by second round TKO to Conor McGregor last November and then fought to a no contest with Dustin Poirier after landing illegal knees to the head, so he will be eager to derail Gaethje’s hype train and get back to winning ways.
