Karolina Kowalkiewicz Confirms Eye Injury; Requires Surgery

Karolina Kowalkiewicz had a tough night against Yan Xioanan at UFC Fight Night 168 this past weekend, not helped by the fact that she suffered an eye injury in the first round that clearly troubled her for the rest of the fight.

Despite the damage, which compromised her vision, Kowalkiewicz still fought to the final bell, but lost by unanimous decision and has since confirmed that she’ll now need to undergo surgery.

“First in my life after fight, I cannot say I am OK,” Kowalkiewicz said on Instagram.  “In the beginning of first round, I have broken small bone. I couldn’t see nothing. My vision was double and everything was in the fog.

“After fight, I spent all day in hospital. Today, I’m going to specialist and they make decision. I need operation. I’m waiting for the decision here, or I’ll go back to Poland and make this operation in Poland. But doctors say I have to stay here because flying with this eye is very dangerous.”

By the sounds of things Kowalkiewicz must have suffered a broken orbital bone, which will likely keep her out of action for some time and it’ll  be a worrying time for her as the 34-year-old has  now lost her last four fights in a row.
