Ray Borg Defeats Jussier Formiga By Unanimous Decision At UFC Fight Night 106

Ray Borg edged out Jussier Formiga on the scorecards tonight at UFC fight Night 106 after a flyweight scrap that was highly competitive for the full 15 minutes.

Round One:

Both men snapping out the jab to start. Nice combo of punches followed by a kick from Formiga. Brief clinch and Borg lands a knee to the body.

Another combination from Formiga. Another knee to the body from Borg. Big uppercut for Borg now.

Body punch from Formiga. Now a leg kick. Borg made to miss with a right hand. Another kick for Formiga but that strays to the groin and Borg requires a brief stoppage to recover.

Back to it they go. Borg misses with a couple of punches and ducks under into the clinch. Formiga reverses the position though and pushes him into the cage.

Knees to the legs for Formiga and a high knee from Borg in response. Nice knee to the body from Borg and a couple of punches to the midsection from Formiga.

another knee for Borg and then he gets off the cage. Left hook lands for Formiga. Big uppercut for Borg again. Formiga avoids a few punches and then replies with a couple of punches of his own.

High kick attempt from Borg and then they both land a punch apiece. Nice combo from Formiga. He tries for a takedown, but it’s stuffed.

Head kick attempt from Borg and Formiga retaliates with a spinning backfist that lands. Borg shrugs it off though and gets straight back to fighting as the round ends.

Round Two:

Left hand for Borg to start the second and then straight into a takedown attempt. Formiga keeps his balance though and Borg has to settle for pressing him to the cage.

Soon after Formiga reverses the position. They separate with Borg firing off a big hook. Body punch lands for Formiga.

Leg kick for Formiga. Borg misses with a few punches. Explosive flying knee to the head from Borg. Borg almost manages to slam his opponent to the mat, but Formiga somehow keeps on his feet.

Borg pressing him up against the cage now and trying hard for the takedown, but Formiga is hsowing excellent takedown defense.

Borg continues working for a single leg at the half-way mark in the fight. Not a lot happening her and the referee resets them in the center of the Octagon.

They exchange in close. Formiga with a punch and then a takedown attempt that’s blocked. Knee to the body in close for Formiga. Now a leg kick.

A punch gets through for Borg. Both men land a punch now. Formiga with another leg kick. Hard left hand and then a leg kick from Formiga that knocks Borg off-balance.

Borg laughs it off and then comes back hard with a kick followed by a spinning backfist. Such a close fight here, but Formiga is really starting to hurt Borg’s lead leg.

Round Three:

Borg in on an immediate takedown and partially gets Oliveira down, but he’s right back up to his feet and presses Borg to the cage.

Formiga able to get Borg down now and looks to mount quickly. Great scramble by Borg though and he gets back up working for a takedown against the cage.

Another scramble as they hit the mat again and Formiga gets on top and now he slickly moves to Borg’s back. Plenty of time to work here for the Brazilian.

Formiga staying patient as he looks for the chance to sink in a rear-naked choke. Borg tries to wall walk, but it doesn’t work out.

Borg wriggles and writhes to spin around and get on top with less than two minutes to go. He lands a solid couple of elbows. A few more land as he really tries to make a statement in the closing minutes of the fight.

Excelllent elbows from Borg and then Formiga tries to throw his legs up looking for a submission. Borg scrambles though and threatens to take either his back or mount. He settles for half-guard though and ends the round on top to take this fight to the judges.

Decision:

Such a close, competitive fight here from start to finish and it could go either way, but the judges see it unanimously in Borg’s favor (29-28 x3).
