Robbie Lawler Vs Stephen Thompson Targeted For ESPN Event In January

A welterweight clash between former champion ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is believed to be in the works for an as yet unannounced event on January 18th of next year.

It is believed that the mouthwatering match-up will serve as part of the UFC’s first ever event on ESPN as their new broadcast deal begins at the turn of the year.

If the bout is made official it will be Lawler’s first fight since coming out on the wrong end of a unanimous decision against Rafael dos Anjos back in December of last year.

Since then Lawler has been out of action due to an ACL injury, but it’s believed he should be fit in time to make his comeback early next year in time for the event.

As for Thompson, he is also coming off a unanimous decision loss against Darren Till at UFC Fight Night 130 in May, which leaves the former two-time title contender ranked No.4 in the 170lb weight class, one spot above Lawler.

Lawler Vs Thompson is the first fight to be linked to the first UFC On ESPN event, which is likely to be a star-studded affair to celebrate the start of their five-year TV deal together.
