Stephen Thompson already holds a 2017 unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal, but it seems ‘Wonderboy’ is now eager to get the chance to go up against him again.
“I’m ranked one higher than Masvidal and he’s a striker,” Thompson explained on The MMA Hour show. “Give me a striker, UFC. Give me somebody that wants to stand there and strike, please! Masvidal would be awesome. We’ve been talking about this for a long time, the NMF [Nicest Motherf*****] vs. the BMF [Baddest Motherf*****].”
However, Thompson has a back-up plan if a fight with ‘Gamebred’ doesn’t work out, suggesting that Robbie Lawler would also fit the bill.
“I know Robbie Lawler was thrown out there as well. Even though he’s not ranked, he’s still an exciting opponent, a guy I’ve been trying to fight since he was champ, so there are some guys there.”
Thompson is coming off back-to-back unanimous decision losses at the top-end of the division in 2021 against Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad, while prior to that he’d put together back-to-back wins against Geoff Neal and Vicente Luque.
As for Masvidal, he’s now gone three fights without a win against current champion Kamaru Usman (twice) and Colby Covington, while Lawler claimed a TKO finish against Nick Diaz last time out after having gone on a four-fight losing run before that.
