Following last night’s UFC Fight Night 210 event in Las Vegas the recipients of the evening’s $50,000 bonus awards were announced.
‘Fight Of The Night’ honors were handed to a co-main event war between Gregory Rodrigues and Chidi Njokuani that saw Rodrigues suffering one of the worst cuts we’ve seen in a while when he ducked in for a takedown in the opening round and was greeted by a big knee that opened up a sickeningly large and deep gash from eyebrow to eyebrow.
‘Robocop’ lived up to his name by not only surviving that blow and somehow staying on his feet, but even managing to drop his opponent a bit later in the round, while also looking to implement his ground game.
There was real pressure on him to finish the fight as soon as possible though as the doctor warned the ref in-between rounds that the fight would have to stop if the cut got any worse, and sure enough Rodrigues was able to land a takedown in the second round and then dropped down heavy ground-and-pound blows to take the wind out of Njokuani’s sails and emerge with a memorable TKO victory.
Meanwhile, Joe Pyfer earned one of two ‘Performance Of The Night ‘awards after he uncorked a powerful right hand that floored Alen Amedosvki, with a follow-up punch as his opponent lay dazed on the canvas sealing the first round TKO victory.
Also earning a performance bonus was Damon Jackson, who just a few days ago received the devastating news that his older brother had died.
Somehow Jackson found it within himself to fight and he wasted no time in seizing the upperhand in his fight against Pat Sabatini, landing a front kick to the face and then getting on top when his opponent desperately tried to get a takedown. From there Jackson was able to get his back, flatten him out and land punches until his opponent submitted, before understandably being overcome by emotion afterwards.
