‘The California Kid’ Urijah Faber confirmed that he was making a comeback from retirement at the age of 40 earlier this week, and now we know his opponent.
Faber has signed up to fight Ricky Simon at UFC Fight Night 155 in Sacremento, California on July 13th, marking his first bout in two-and-a-half years after hanging up his gloves following a win over Brad Pickett in December of 2016.
“I was gonna fight Kron (Gracie) and Kron said no, as the main event at 145,” Faber told Dan Hardy. “Then I was pitching Cub (Swanson). (Matchmaker Sean Shelby) said no because (Swanson) is on a four-fight losing streak and didn’t do anything for the division.
“Then they said Ricky Simon wants it. So I said alright. There’s so many guys out in the division. I took some time off, started a family, which is one of the reasons why I stopped. I felt like I needed to slow down in order to progress.”
Simon isn’t as big a name as the other two fighters Faber mentioned, but he’s still very dangerous as his record stands at an impressive 15-1 and the 26-year-old has already racked up a trio of wins inside the Octagon, with his latest being a unanimous decision win over Rani Yahya back in February.
