The vacant women’s flyweight title will be up for grabs when Valentina Shevchenko and Joanna Jedrzekczyk fight each other at UFC 231 on December 8th in Toronto, Canada.
Shevchenko had originally been scheduled to fight former champion Nicco Montano at UFC 228 earlier this month, but her opponent had to withdraw during the week of the fight after a bad weight cut and was subsequently stripped of her title.
Now she will go up against a much tougher opponent in former strawweight champion Jedrzejczyk, but ‘Bullet’ has a major ace up her sleeve in that she has previously defeated the Polish star on three separate occasions in muay thai fights earlier in their careers.
Shevchenko has also made her mark as an MMA fighter too, having defeated the likes of Holly Holm, Julianna Pena and Sarah Kaufman, while the only two losses of her UFC career to date both came against current bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes.
As for Jedrzeczjyk, she was the UFC’s longtime 115lb champion, but suffered back-to-back losses against Rose Namajunas in the past year.
Nevertheless, those are the only two losses of her 17-fight career and she has bouncing back since with a decision victory over Tecia Torres.
Now she’s going to attempt to gain vengeance over Shevchenko and become a champion once again in the division above in the main event of a UFC 231 card that will also feature a women’s strawweight encounter between Claudia Gadelha and Nina Anseroff in the co-main event.
