Fight Report

Yoel Romero defeats Ronny Markes by TKO at 1.39mins of Rd3

Romero had the better of the striking exchanges in the opening round, picking his moments to leap in with single, heavy punches to the head and also mixing in unorthadox techniques from time to time.  Markes surprised him though by securing a couple of takedowns, though he couldn’t keep Romero down.  He also managed to stuff a late takedown from Romero too.   In the second round Romero really started to stamp his authority on the fight, landing more powerful punches that briefly knocked Markes off-balance early.  Mid-way through the round he showed his strength by whipping Markes to the ground from the thai clinch.  Then a little later on he cracked off a hard body kick that folded Markes to the canvas, though he recovered quickly.  In fact Markes started to bring the fight to Romero in the final minute and caught him with a couple of clean punches that gave him food for thought.  In the third round Markes started brightly enough, but Romero then landed a hard shot that seemed to take a little of the wind out of his sails.  Romero started to work a little more to the body, then unleashed a crushing left hand that dropped Markes.  Romero paused thinking the fight might be over, but the referee hesitated and so he stepped in and landed a couple of more blows to his still dazed opponent on the mat before the bout did finally come to an end.  Romero looked very impressive at times here, definitely someone to keep a close eye on.

Michael Chiesa defeats Colton Smith by submission (rear-naked choke) at 1.41mins of Rd2

The first round was a battle of submission attempts, with Chiesa initially starting strongly on the mat with a number of rear-naked choke attempts, but never managed to fully sink it in. Smith then was able to scramble out and as they got standing again he climbed onto Chiesa’s back and then it was then his turn to attempt the RNC. He seemed to have it in tight, but Chiesa was able to roll to the mat to escape. Early in the second Chiesa was able to apply a hip throw that landed Smith on his head. Smith seemed dazed and Chiesa was able to secure the rear-naked choke and this time produced a quick tap.
