Fight Report

Adriano Martins defeats Rustam Khabilov by split decision (29-28 x2, 28-29)

Plenty of unexpected results in Brazil tonight and this was another one. Surprisingly it was Martins who showed off his wrestling in the opening five minutes with a nice takedown that caught Khabilov off-guard and helped win him the round. Martins was more hesitant in the second though and after a slow start himself, Khabilov started to make an impact with his striking in the last few minutes of the round. He was landing some good punches, but Martins had him staggering after a hook right at the bell. In the third Martins went back to using his wrestling, something that Khabilov completely failed to during the fight, and it proved to be a winning strategy for him as he secured a couple of important takedowns that would help win him not only the round, but also the fight.

Frankie Saenz defeats Iuri Alcantara by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28)

The first round of this fight was closely contested, but from then on Saenz started to take more control with takedowns and some good use of knees during his ground and pound attacks while shrugging off his opponents submission attempts when neccessary. Alcantara had his moments, and even in the dying seconds of the final round he secured a takedown, but Saenz quickly reversed it and landed punches to end on a high note.

Santiago Ponzinibbio defeats Sean Strickland by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

Good competitive scrap here. For the most part it was fought on the feet and it was Ponzinibbio who was edging the action in each round with a mix of kicks and punches, even landing a couple of head kicks along the way, though with more of a slap than a thud. Strickland opted to pump out the jab a lot and had solid success with it including a couple of momentary knockdowns, but that aside his offense was more limited and he was never able to control his opponent via wrestling the way he would have liked. So Strickland loses his undefeated record but he wasn’t dominated the way the scorecards may suggest.
